We wanted to research what factors contribute most to the growing rat population in New York City. Our hypotheses attributed that more dense populations, and areas with lower socioeconomic status would see higher rat sightings. To conduct our experiment, we chose 7 zip codes that we would set up in four major comparisons. The criteria for our data comparisons were choosing zip codes that were similar in population density but different median incomes, and vice versa. Our dataset spans from 2010 to 2020. Rat sighting data came from official 311 complaints linked to specific addresses. Income data came from simplemaps.com. Population data came from unitedstateszipcodes.org. Our results alluded that other factors may play a role in rat population numbers across New York City. Further questions gained from this research include: How successful have the NYC government, councils, and municipal agencies been in exterminating rat populations?; How have their current efforts changed from past efforts?
