American Ballet at the David H. Koch Theater: Kingdom of the Shades

Seating view in theater from 3rd ring. Center view with curtins closed and lighting dimmed slightly.

Group Members: Najma Gure, Koudjedji Sylla

Located at Lincoln Center, the David H. Koch Theater is a large venue for various performances, including ballet. As NYC cultural explorers, we observed the ballet performance: The American Ballet. The 3 hour long show included four scenes. For this project, we specifically went into depth on the first scene, called Kingdom of the Shades. We chose this scene as one of the more memorable ones because of the intricate plot, costumes, and stage details. As this was both our first time watching ballet, we highly recommend everyone should go to a theater performance. The experience was enjoyable and moving.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Our project dives into one of the main forms of art in NYC: ballet. The American Ballet performance is a blend of many different genres like classical ballet, jazz, tap dancing, and more. Ballet continues to evolve as more progressive artists are introduced. Our project highlights the significance of ballet as an artistic outlet, which expands the role of art in communities.
