An Appreciation to The Angel of the Waters

Group Members: – Selvin Rojas

In seminar 1, I decide to choose one of the most iconic spots in New York City, The Angel of the Waters. Due to its constant appearances in various movies throughout the years, I believe that it has become a must visit place in New York.

Making a collage allowed me to express how this statue has managed to stay there in one of the most known places such as the Central Park. It is there no matter what, even when there is the heaviest snowing day, it is still there.

Making a short series of peons gave me the perfect opportunity to highlight how this piece of art is in fact a part of New York since it has managed to stay in the same spot for various decades. Also, it is in to give a voice to the statue. I wanted to tell people that this statue represents a fraction of New York’s history since it reminds people the moment New York City had access to fresh water. In addition, since it is an iconic place in New York, I wanted people to know how they are welcomed to go to visit it any time they want.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing this project helped me to understand that art is an important part of New Yorkers' lives since it is the way people express their thoughts and feelings. Having art shows how society prospers.
