As a group, we were curious about what the official state mammal of NYS was, and were shocked to find out it was the beaver. We were curious about what kind of bodies of water were common to find beavers nearby, so using data from iNaturalist, we created our own map to showcase to viewers of where they are most likely to find beavers in NYS. We did this by using latitude and longitude points of beaver sightings and we located the bodies of water nearby 1-by-1. We found that beavers were more common in the SE of NYS and mostly by creeks, and did some more research as to see why. Either way, since CCNY’s mascot is Benny the Beaver, it was fun to learn more about the mammal and we hope the viewers enjoy learning more about beavers as well!
