Chelsea : Art Meets Heart

Group Members: Tanzia Begum, Samira Hasan, Ainesey Arevalo

Chelsea, NY harbors a history full of life and diversity often unbeknownst to others. It is filled with people from all over the world, first homing people who have immigrated from Germany and Ireland. Currently, the community is majority LGBTQ+ and is celebrated for its inclusiveness and exciting festivities hosted by its many small businesses and hubs. This area of Manhattan is also known for its various murals. The art shown around Chelsea represents the diversity of the area and the different social issues that the people have experienced over time.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Through our research we were able to gain a newfound appreciation for the arts in relation to the history of New York City, an integral location for diversity and inclusivity. As a group we were able to understand how Chelsea has changed over the years, turning into a bustling city filled with a melting pot of people.
