Comparing Bronx County Bee Sightings and Activity Between Different Species Throughout the Day

A poster of a scientific study using iNaturalist data to breakdown the total bee sightings in Bronx County.

Group Members: Matthew Zhou, Samson Wu, Susan Lin, Alexandra Andrawes

During our Bioblitz in September, we noticed that different bugs and insects appeared for various shifts. This made us question the correlation between the time of day and the different species in Van Cortlandt Park. We focused our poster project on specifically bee species, using iNaturalist data of Bronx County, and focused on the timestamp when each bee observation was uploaded and how many observations were made per hour. Our data showed that bee sightings peaked at 5:00 PM. Then focusing on the top 4 bee species, we learned that they all peaked at different times. (Brown-Belted Bumble Bees at 2:00 pm, Eastern Carpenter Bees at 3:00 pm, Common Eastern Bumble Bees at 5:00 pm, and Western Honey Bee at 7:00 pm). This suggests that bees tend to be active at different times, perhaps to reduce competition with other bees or to synchronize their activity with specific flowerings. A further study may focus on following bees to their preferred pollen source and observing if there is competition at that site.
