Exploring the Evolution of Women’s Fashion in NYC

Group Members: Maya Hussein, Hailey Alleyne, Sara Almardaee, Diana Chen Feng, and Keanna Lewis

Our project mirrors the changes in women’s societal roles through the evolution of women’s fashion. We were inspired by the arts of NYC and the Whitney Museum’s exhibitions. Exploring various art pieces taught us that each fashion choice is a statement made about who we are and what we value.

By connecting evolutionary fashion trends to cultural shifts, we want to show how women’s clothing is not just a form of style. Fashion is a way for women to find empowerment, establish unity, and express themselves.

The Whitney Museum showed us that fashion merges elements of design and creativity to reflect historical contexts. With our project, we hope to get people to understand these contexts. We want our project to help people understand the stories being told behind what we choose to wear. We hope this inspires others to view fashion as an art that celebrates the voices and stories of our community!

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing this project showed us how art connected New Yorkers by reflecting their values, cultures, and history. Through the lens of women's fashion evolution, we saw how art plays a crucial role in shaping individual identities and society's collectiveness. The Whitney Museum's displays highlighted the significance behind each art piece by representing stories of empowerment and resilience in the role of women in society throughout history, thus fostering a sense of unity.
