Expressions Mask

Group Members: Nick Runfola

My mask includes my 2 ethnicity’s, Italian and Turkish, which I am proud to be both! On the bottom right cheek pictured is a paper airplane, which when I was 10 years old in the 4th grade, I made a paper airplane business, seeking to make an extra few dollars for some candy! My grandfather kickstarted this business by teaching me more efficient ways to make the airplanes, and a better business model. At the time I saw my grandfather as a business partner, but now looking back on it I realized those are precious memories that I will hold with me forever now that he is gone. I’m sure he wasn’t passionate about paper airplanes, and probably did not care much about me making 15 dollars, but as a way to bond with his grandson. The money bag on the bottom left shows my desire to make money, ever since I was a kid I would create small business to make money, and I have always had a love for the process of making money. Finally the top of the mask is an ocean sunset with birds flying in the distance. The ocean is very special to me, growing up every weekend my family and I would go to the Jersey shore, and my brother and I would play in the beach all day, and to this day I love the water and will always enjoy going in. The sunset represents my past relatives, my uncle and grandfather looking down on me, at least my grandma says that! Ever since I was a kid she would always say a beautiful sunset Is Uncle Anthony and Grandpa showing that they’re still with us. The birds just seemed fitting with the whole setting.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

It did not, but it helped me express my life in an artistic way which I usually am not connected with.
