Fracturing Frustration

It is a frontal angle of man screaming. He is seen from the shoulder up. There are tears in his eyes. The color palette is warm tones making his skin appear bright red. Half of his face is obscured by shadows.

Many artists cover how society or different communities feel at different points in time. At the same time though, we must take time to look at the individual. The painting is of a person breaking down. They are literally in pieces. The focus on the upper body is to highlight the emotions. Often times, we are told to either hide or dismiss our frustration, but in reality that only tears us apart from the inside. We need to take more measures so that we can all express and handle our emotions in a healthy way.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

It made me really think. It wasn't about what someone else made for me to view. This time it was about what I thought was important. This time it was about what I could offer. I think that mental health is becoming more and more talked about today, but I also feel like it isn't nearly understood enough. Everyone knows what it is, but not enough people put that knowledge into use. There are so many struggles we all face from day to day. It's important that we take care of our minds and mental health. Everyone deserves to live a good and happy life and a big part of that is mental health awareness- not just good physical health.
