Identity Mask Project

The image is a mask with different drawings that represent my identity, passions, and hobbies.

Group Members: Rachel Malamud, Gabriella Cota, Elisa Ujkashi, Sasha Smolansky, Anna Kopachevsky

When people present themselves to society, they are typically wearing a mask that either shows only their best qualities or what they want to share with others. For my mask, I featured the obvious aspects of myself from the eyes to the bottom. The purple around the eyes represents mystery and how I am a private person. The glasses are to show my nerdy side and my love for learning. The flags on the cheeks show that I am proud to be an American Jew and I do not hide my background for any reasons. The word “truth” on the lips emphasizes that I am very straightforward with people and will tell them the truth, even when it may hurt.

The top of the mask, or the brain, features some of my passions and hobbies. This is what people learn about me once they get to know me better. Firstly, I am an Aires, indicating I have a bold, competitive, and independent personality. I am also a reader and my choice of book whenever I want to imagine is the Harry Potter series. The airplane is to show that traveling is a special family bonding experience for me and wish to travel to more European countries. The music notes represent that I enjoy listening to music of various genres and chances are that I will have a new song stuck in my head everyday.

Masks can be quite deceptive which is why it is important to show people the real you.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing my project helped me explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities by highlighting how quick people are to judge artwork without even trying to understand it. There are many layers and reasons behind why the artist chose to create their art the way they did. Rather than thinking and breaking it down, people allow their biases to make the decision for them. Just because the message is not obvious does not mean it is not a worthy piece of art. This is similar to the identity mask project I completed because people judge others by what they immediately see on the outside. Even once they get to know that person, the prior bias already made the executive decision. Hiding behind a mask will prevent others from getting to know all of you. That is why it is important to show your real identity to your community; you are a work of art yourself!
