Inflation Suspect Board

Inflation Suspect Board

Group Members: Habeba Mahmoud, Sarah Mustafa

This project revolves around various issues around NYC and how they all connect to the main “suspect” being inflation. It’s known that inflation impacts many things, including energy, food, shelter, and congestion. These are considered the “victims” of the wanted suspect, “inflation.” It is meant to be an interactive piece where people viewing the poster pull out index cards, read the description, and figure out how these “victims” are linked to each other. After they do that, then they ultimately figure out the aftermath of these impacts, which lead to protests, domestic violence, robberies, burglaries, and more. The whole takeaway we want people to learn from this is that inflation doesn’t just affect one thing. It’s like a virus that spreads, impacting various aspects, and its more than just the four that I have listed, although these are the most common.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing this project helped us explore the role of art in the lives of New Yorkers & their communities because it showed us that although inflation has impacted thousands of New Yorkers and has disrupted their daily lives, they used that to amplify their voices, whether it was through glueing their hands on art pieces in museums where rich people are or blocking the highways in protest. Their voices that shout equity and fairness display art within itself, since it shows that even though they are struggling, their creative minds can find a way to grab people's attention to these dire issues and influence others to join the movement as well.
