Midtown Melancholy

Group Members: Neil Sukhra, Zuleyka Fermin, Ayana Singh, Joshua Truong

This project highlights the architectural facets of Grand Central Terminal and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, two iconic structures of NYC. It presents a young adult’s perspective on city commutes through a photo essay accompanied by sound effects and narration. Instead of focusing on the busy and crowded part of NYC, we dive into what an almost empty city with an eerie feeling would look and sound like.

The photos were chosen to highlight the quiet, unique areas of Midtown Manhattan. The audio makes the story immersive and dramatized for a theatrical effect. The text and photo pairing places a creative viewpoint on familiar areas of NYC. This perspective sheds new light on these landmarks by highlighting mythological undertones and depicting them as stops on a surreal journey. Our goal is to appreciate the environment’s architecture by using fictional storytelling to provide a new perspective on life in an area that is typically lively and bustling with people.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

We were forced to find something new and interesting about familiar areas. We had to think outside the box on how to create a unique and engaging story that provides new perspectives on two popular landmarks in Midtown.
