Sasha Smolansky STEAM Mask

Group Members: Sasha Smolansky, Anna Kopachevsky, Elisa Ujkashi, Gabriella Cota, Rachel Malamud, Suzanna Grigoryan

My project is meant to resonate young girls who are still uncertain of their place in this world. Where we were at one point gripping onto the warmth and comfort of our mother’s security, we must now grapple with the fear of not belonging to ourselves in the current political climate that risks our autonomy. The last moment of joy and innocence I remember having was being in my mother’s arms, now I am a graduate and meant to fend for myself in this world that prays on my downfall. I must now learn from my mother and have thicker skin in this vicious world that I must one day protect my daughter from before I eventually teach her to succeed as we all ultimately do.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Art can be used to express your political viewpoints and have it be interpreted in countless ways, whether ti be feminist, independent, or motherly and caring.
