The Beautiful Sights of the Northern Lights: NYC vs Upstate

The project examines how geographic factors, light pollution, and atmospheric conditions affect Northern Lights visibility in New York. Using data analysis and heat maps, it compares NYC's urban environment with upstate regions like Buffalo to reveal how natural and manmade elements influence aurora sightings. This work highlights the challenges of urban viewing while offering insights for enthusiasts to optimize their observation experiences.

Group Members: Shuhana Uddin, Naomi Guerrier, Lulu O’Rourke-Chisholm, and Jawad Shamim

The project focuses on analyzing the visibility of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) across different regions in New York, particularly comparing urban areas like New York City to rural areas in upstate New York. By studying factors such as geographic latitude, light pollution, and atmospheric conditions, the research aims to identify how and why visibility varies in these locations.
