The Heights of Culture

the culture of heights thumbnail

Group Members: Safa Mufti, Iman Ahmed, Stephen Shaw, Robert Palacios

We chose to explore Jackson Heights because of its vibrant Hispanic and South Asian communities, which reflect the cultural backgrounds of our group. With one of us being Hispanic and three of us associating with South Asian culture, this area resonates with our shared heritage. We chose to do a hands-on exploration of this neighborhood by taking photos there and collecting materials. Our collage consists of several different elements like ethnic newspapers, comic book clippings, wrappers, and photos. We hope people take away the understanding that Jackson Heights is a remarkable example of cultural harmony, where diverse communities coexist and interact seamlessly. When we were walking through the neighborhood, the transition from Little Colombia to the South Asian part of Jackson Heights was effortless as cultures and languages started to blend.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

This project has allowed us to explore the art that exists in Jackson Heights. Through our on-site research, we were able to observe firsthand how art reflects and enhances the diversity of the neighborhood. We discovered everything from murals to small shops filled with traditional trinkets. The true art of Jackson Heights lies in its diverse cultures and the unique way they shape the neighborhood's identity. Realizing how close in proximity completely separate cultures are helps connect us despite our differences. It became clear that art in Jackson Heights is not just a form of expression but also a powerful tool for cultivating understanding, unity, and shared identity among its residents. From the storefronts in Little Columbia waving Latin America flags, to the kurtay being flaunted in the storefront windows of Little India; there is a true mesh of art and culture.
