THE INFLUENCE OF HUMAN POPULATION ON SQUIRREL DISTRIBUTION

Group Members: Michael Russo, Joyce Hu, Fatima Shabbir, Danny Katash, Danielle Hanna, Joselyn Zainos

During our study, we aimed to determine whether human population density influences the distribution of the Eastern Gray Squirrel population within Van Cortlandt Park. We hypothesized that human activity disrupts squirrels’ natural habitat and behavior, and therefore, greater human population density would correlate with fewer Eastern Gray Squirrel sightings. We used data from the NYC census to measure human concentration in the six neighborhoods bordering Van Cortlandt Park, as well as raw iNaturalist data for squirrel sightings between July and September of 2024. We performed a linear regression test, which yielded an insignificant p-value. Therefore, our results are inconclusive, and future, more elaborate studies are needed. Our goal for this project was to highlight the need for studies on how human interaction influences urban wildlife.
