Who We Are – Elements of Realism

Group Members: Juli-Anne Sarji, Chloe Catalano, Eshaal Ubaid, Athena Eyzaguirre, and Kaylin Laureano

Identities are multifaceted and complex. Our poster was designed to reflect these ideals and explore our identities as a community. Each part of the poster has elements that represent us. The music notes on the left represent Chloe’s love for music. The frame was used for Juli’s original portrait. The inner frame has blue diamonds which represent her eye color, the second layer has swirls, which she made to give off a rich and classy vibe, and the third layer has flowers and vines, which represent beauty and power. In Athena’s hands, she is carrying books because she loves to read. The bottom has a mix of Eshaal’s microphones and trophies and Kaylin’s flowers. A big part of Eshaal’s identity is public speaking and debate, and Kaylin enjoys nature, so within her self-portrait, she drew in flowers that express that interest.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Although we are all New Yorkers, there are things about us that differentiate us. In part, that is due to the different communities we surrounded ourselves with and were born into. Creating this collaborative self-portrait served as a reminder of our individuality. Art, especially the creation of self-portraits, plays a unique role in the discovery of who you are. Throughout the process of creating this piece, we realized how art brought us together and presents a place for communities to experience unity and mutual appreciation.
