A Journey Through the Eyes of a Flâneur: The Power of Observation

Group Members: Brian Asnadi, Joshua Trogan, Daniel Leyzerzon

For this project, the theme is how being observant of our surroundings can help us establish a deeper connection with our community and what’s around us. The project takes you through what it means to be observant, and how anyone can spectate the city like a flaneur. We then mapped our walks throughout the city, snapping photos of what caught our attention and applying the principles of observation to record what we observed and learned from looking at the city from a new perspective.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing this project highlighted how art and observation are intertwined in New York City’s vibrant landscape. Our project showcases how observing, like a flâneur, enables a deeper connection to the city and its stories. By immersing ourselves in the city’s rhythm and nuances, art becomes more than expression & it becomes a tool for empathy, helping us understand others’ lives and perspectives and gain new insights about our own city. Whether it be through architecture, nature, or people, the arts connect individuals to their city and each other.
