Identity Mask Project – Suzanna Grigoryan

Decorated Identity Mask

Group Members: Suzanna Grigoryan, Rachel Malamud, Gabriella Cota, Anna Kopachevsky, Sasha Smolansky, Elisa Ujakshi

When first viewing this mask, the initial noticeable feature is its split colors of purple and blue. On a surface level, these colors are my favorite, however they symbolize my personality. The purple half resembles my creativity and imagination, which works together with my blue half, resembling wisdom and intelligence. Sometimes, I exhibit characteristics that pertain to a sole half, but mostly both of these aspects combine in order to constitute me as a whole. Further, it is seen that both halves are displayed in opposite styles. Whereas the white flame symbolizes negativity on the purple side, it symbolizes positivity on the blue side, therefore conveying the purity and perfection that l persevere to maintain, regardless of occasional failure. Likewise, the snowflakes embody the general message that life is cyclic, coming up and down. On a more specific level, however, the snowflakes also showcase my love for the winter season, as I enjoy visiting Québec, Canada, for annual ski trips.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

In completing this project, I was able to explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities by realizing how personal certain pieces can be. This project allowed me to learn of the hard work and identity that is invested into various works of art.
