Solar Energy: Savior or Danger? A Look at the Impact of Photovoltaic Solar Farms in the Mojave Desert on Plants

Vertical poster displaying graphs about survival of plants within the range of solar panels, explains tactics for plant persevation

Group Members: William Daniel, Michelle Wang, Dania Atieh, Jennifer Evo, and Batya Yelloz

My group had an interest in making a poster that addressed both energy resources and biodiversity. These were inspired by both our energy group projects during the semester and by the BioBlitz, respectfully. We decided to find impacts of a renewable energy source on the environment, a topic scarcely talked about. Solar panels in the Mojave Desert have been approved for expansion and as a major hotspot for their general use. Here, we found multiple research articles that compiled data that forwards the question of how solar panel expansion has and could potentially affect plant species, whether for better or worse.
