An Inspiration from Nature: The Lotus Flower and the Intricate History and Uses

Lotus Flower Presentation

Group Members: Matthew Buscini, Elliot Radov. Ryan Spelman, Dylan Murphy, Gaetano Gambino

The lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera) has been cherished for its historical, literary, medicinal, and culinary significance. Symbolizing purity and rebirth, it features prominently in the art and literature of ancient cultures like Egypt, India, and China. Modern research highlights its medicinal potential, with extracts showing promise in managing diabetes through glucose regulation and aldose reductase inhibition, and in Alzheimer’s disease by reducing oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. In culinary traditions, its seeds, rhizomes, and petals are valued for their flavor and nutritional benefits. This research explores the lotus flower’s timeless cultural and scientific importance, bridging tradition and innovation.
