Artists in NYC

Poster depicting art of Keith Haring and Charles Retthew Sheeler Jr.

Group Members: Moussa Cisse, Margot Dragos, Eliyahou Saadia, Lucianna Sidel, Lily Zuss

Each member of our group chose an artist who has made an impact on NYC and selected three of their works to analyze. The artists chosen were Andre D. Wagner, Alex Katz, Charles Retthew Sheeler Jr., Basquiat, and Keith Harring. Although they have all created art in New York City, the style and themes of their work are unique to them. From Sheeler’s paintings in the early 20th century to Wagner’s photographs from the present-day, we learned that New York City has been portrayed in dozens of different ways artistically throughout the years. Through our collages, we want people to learn about how all kinds of aspects of New York City have been represented by different artists over time. Others can also see how the different themes and modes of the pieces chosen represent the city in multiple ways.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

This project gave us a better understanding of the scope of art created in New York City and how the city has been portrayed differently over time. We learned how different pieces, such as Harring's "Crack is Wack" mural in East Harlem, can protest against different injustices in communities throughout the city as well as unite New Yorkers through art.
