Bang!: Impressions of Banksy

Group Members: Lesley Lo

I researched different controversies regarding Banksy and his art, specifically focusing on Hammer Boy due to the irony of its location in the Upper West Side, a place which has relatively less graffiti and is largely dominated by white, affluent residents, challenging Banksy’s themes of social justice. For my creative project, I conducted short interviews with 5 students and asked them their impressions of Hammer Boy without giving them any context. The interviews have been compiled and can be found at the link.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

I was able to see a variety of perspectives regarding public art, street art, and graffiti in the lives of New Yorkers. Examining the location of Hammer Boy also helped me delve deeper into gentrification and the choice of location for public art, and how that impacts accessibility by different demographics.
