Noise pollution is one of the most pervasive forms of pollution but is also one of the most overlooked issues plaguing our society in the modern day. This is because noise pollution is not as visible as other forms of pollution such as air pollution, water pollution, or even light pollution. These forms of pollution can be visible but noise pollution is only auditory. This leads to noise pollution often being overlooked as an issue in favor of other problems. However, we believe that noise pollution can interfere with concentration, memory, and overall cognitive functioning, which are all critical for academic success. From this, we hypothesize that neighborhoods with higher noise pollution have students with weaker academic performance. We were able to conclude that there is a negative correlation, although weak, between noise complaint density and academic performance per dollar of students in NYC’s public school districts. However, larger, stronger data sets are required to draw more conclusive results.
