Little Island, Big Impression: The Intersection of Immersion and Nature on Little Island

Group Members: Mindi Tuchman

After attending the High Line in the beginning of this semester, I found myself interested in the category of natural, immersive art and its purpose within the New York City aesthetic landscape. The park of Little Island had taken over the space of Pier 54 after it was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. However, Little Island is more than an unusual park, Heatherwick Studio has transformed the space to act as a safe space from busy New York City life. A mix between the city’s past and future, the space encompassing Pier 54 has always acted as a safe getaway. Its aesthetic blends urban modernity with nature, bringing a forward-thinking vision of how cities can rebuild with ecological responsibility.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

This project had allowed me to think deeply into the artistic spaces that New York City provides. Every step throughout the city was well thought out and created with intention.
