After attending the High Line in the beginning of this semester, I found myself interested in the category of natural, immersive art and its purpose within the New York City aesthetic landscape. The park of Little Island had taken over the space of Pier 54 after it was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. However, Little Island is more than an unusual park, Heatherwick Studio has transformed the space to act as a safe space from busy New York City life. A mix between the city’s past and future, the space encompassing Pier 54 has always acted as a safe getaway. Its aesthetic blends urban modernity with nature, bringing a forward-thinking vision of how cities can rebuild with ecological responsibility.
