A Review on Francis Alÿs: The Gibraltar Projects, on view at the David Zwirner Gallery

Group Members: Wafa Berri

At first glance at a world map, it’s easy to overlook the narrow passage between Morocco and Spain: two vastly different countries sharing only the Mediterranean Sea. Politically, religiously, and economically, they are polar opposites, yet geographically, they are so close that each can see the other across the Strait of Gibraltar. Alÿs explores why a connection between the two countries remains so challenging.

Alÿs art offers a unique take on real-world issues. His dedication to his craft is evident in every piece, as he invites us to reflect on the difficulties across borders and the power of human connection.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing this project made me better understand how important connection is in diverse settings. Cultural divides are hard to bridge when they start to form, so we must appreciate other cultures and encourage dialogue regarding shared challenges to prevent them. This is especially important in New York, a city defined by its diversity and art.
