Silencing the City: The Role of Tree Density in Mitigating Urban Noise Pollution

Group Members: Isaiah Caines, Abigail Toledo, and Rimsha Tahir

Noise pollution is a significant environmental issue
with far-reaching impacts, including respiratory
agitation, elevated stress levels, and serious health
conditions like heart disease and colitis. Our goal is to
answer the following question: How does the density
of trees in a certain area impact noise pollution in
that area?

This study aims to:
• Investigate whether trees act as natural noise
barriers.
• Examine how noise levels vary with different tree
densities.
• Understand the relationship between tree density
and borough-specific noise pollution levels.
• Explore tree density as a potential strategy to
mitigate noise pollution.

We hypothesize that areas with higher tree density
will have lower noise levels than areas with lower
tree density.
