Urban Plant Diversity and Population Density of Pollinators in NYC Parks​ - Science Forward Project

Group Members: Ron Furer, Vera Gladysheva, Ekaterina Nikitina, Osman Murtazayev​

This study examines how the frequency of goldenrod plants in New York City parks affects the number of bees in these areas. Goldenrod, a native late-blooming flower provides essential food for pollinators, especially when other flowers are scarce. The study found a positive correlation between goldenrod presence and bee populations by conducting bee counts and mapping goldenrod density across various parks. These findings suggest that increasing goldenrod in urban parks could help support bee populations, benefiting urban pollinator health and conservation efforts. This research offers insights into sustainable urban planting strategies that can aid local ecosystems.
