Sunnyside Queens

Group Members: Joyce Chai and Yi Hua Cao

Sunnyside, Queens, has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. Today, Sunnyside is known for its diverse population, thriving small businesses, and strong community atmosphere, blending its historical roots with modern urban life. We wanted to explore a neighborhood that was unfamiliar to us so that we could understand NYC in a new perspective. We wanted to highlight Sunnyside Gardens because of the community’s great connection to nature and the environment.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing this project helped us understand the many roles that art can play in a community setting. Art can make a neighborhood look brighter and more welcoming. Art can hold cherished memories of loved ones and significant figures in history. Art can change the way a person thinks, and art can hold so much history. Just like how people are impacted by their environments and the people around them, people are impacted by art in their neighborhoods and homes.
