This mask is decorated to convey different aspects of my identity. The white Bauhinia flower references the flag of Hong Kong, where my mom is from. The Chinese radical “xin” means “heart,” which references my surname. I included various aspects of nature, such as beaded serviceberries, origami birds, and fabric insects to convey my interest in naturalism and ecology. Using different mediums represents the various types of visual art I do (sewing, photography, origami). The messy patchwork of canvas symbolizes how one’s overall identity is pieced together over time. I left blank space on the canvas to show that my identity is still under development.
